Early summer working update

9th June 2010 14:46:42

Well April & May were busy month’s for me, trip to Liverpool to plant a new perennial bed in preparation for a wedding, designs for a new garden in Ramsgate and Richmond-upon-Thames and maintenance to a lovely Japanese style garden in Chiswick, while also trying to organise and develop my own garden and look after my bonsai trees.

It’s a long way to go on my own garden, as I have a nursery area to set up, clear an area full of weeds and prepare a fernery, prepare and plant a perennial bed and then finally put in my Japanese garden.  So my wife thinks that it is like being married to a dentist and never getting your teeth looked at.

I have planted a selection of very nice trees in the past month an Acer rufinerve (Japanese snake bark maple), Sorbus aucuparia and eight fruit trees.  A garden in my opinion can never have too many trees, and choosing them or training them is a great pleasure.

The Acer is the start of my Japanese style garden and it is exciting to at least make a start. At the moment, this section of the garden is my store area, so amounts to nothing other than plastic sheets to keep the weeds from growing, stone and plants.

The garden I maintain and alter in Chiswick is not my design and was produced by Maureen Busby.  Maureen sadly passed away a few years ago but without a doubt was a shinning light in the Japanese style garden designers fraternity.  You can find her work in the excellent book “The Japanese Way Garden Designs by Maureen Busby” ISBN: 978-0-9558188-0-6.

Maureen introduced me to the Japanese garden society and I have now been a member for over four years.

Over the past couple of years I have added quite a number of components to the garden in Chiswick, and I am very pleased to say that they have immediately blended in and look like subtle additions to the initial design.  I have added some photographs to this blog.

I have also added a photograph of our Clematis montana “Elizabeth” this is coverage after two years, fantastic plant.
